After two days filled with action, drama and history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, it was a difficult Saturday for India. While there were three medal opportunities, the athletes fell agonisingly short on Day 8.

Manu Bhaker, who bagged two bronze medals in the 10m air pistol events, missed out on adding an unprecedented third.

Having occupied the medal positions early in the women’s 25m pistol final, a below-par eighth series saw her in a shoot-off for the podium, where she was second best and finished fourth.

Elsewhere in shooting, Anant Jeet Singh Naruka failed to make the men’s skeet final. Maheshwari Chauhan, on the other hand, is in contention for the women’s skeet medal event after ranking eighth in the qualification with two rounds to go.

Boxer Nishant Dev, meanwhile, lost in a closely contested quarter-final against Pan American Games champion Marco Verde. A win would have been enough for the Indian boxer to confirm a medal on his Olympic debut.

While Bhajan Kaur was knocked out in the round of 16, Deepika Kumari made the women’s individual archery quarter-finals. But after a mistake in the final set, the former world No.1 went down to eventual silver medallist Nam Suhyeon of the Republic of Korea.

Shubhakar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar in men’s golf, along with sailors Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan, also featured at Paris 2024 on Saturday.

The 28-year-old pugilist beat Germany’s Maxi Kloetzer in the round of 32 before going down to reigning Asian Games gold medallist Wu Yu of the People’s Republic of China in the pre-quarterfinal.

Here’s what she has to say.

“The Olympic dream I’ve cherished for so long didn’t unfold as I had hoped. After countless hours of training, sacrifices, and unwavering determination, this moment slipped through my fingers. This defeat is the hardest I’ve ever faced; it cuts deep and is almost unbearable. My heart is heavy, but it remains unbroken. I accept it with grace and will do my best to find a way forward in my life.

Winning an Olympic medal was my greatest dream, and I fought with everything I had to get here. The Paris 2024 journey was filled with challenges—battling through a year of injury, struggling to reclaim my spot, fighting for the opportunity to compete, and overcoming countless obstacles, all for the chance to represent our country on this global stage.

I’m deeply grateful for the chance to pursue my dream, but destiny had other plans. Not achieving it here in Paris is devastating. I wish I could turn back time and put in even more effort for a different outcome, but that remains a wish.

I promise this isn’t the end. I’ll return home to recover and clear my mind. This dream is still alive, and I will continue to chase it with renewed passion. This is not goodbye but a promise to return, to fight harder, and to make you all proud.

Thank you for standing by me. The journey continues.”
